Ok, you expect Sherlock Holmes to pull out lofty deductions from silly and trivial facts, but you also expect him to be somewhat sophisticated and genteel. Well, Downey's version definitely was not. Still, he does good job of making the character his own.
I had a few problems with this movie. The pacing seemed a bit frantic to me at times, as was the camera work. I found the storyline to be geared to the lower common denominators as well but still ok, considering. The thing that really bugged me is that you can see that they're only using this movie as a vehicle to set up a series of sequels, and you were able to see it while the movie was playing, and not just at the end.
Still, overall there was some decent action, some entertaining banter and some funny spots. It was worth watching, and it was kind of fun, but to tell the truth I was expecting more out of it. Downey was excellent as always though. |

I haven't had a chance to see it yet but will put it on my to do or should that be on my to see list yep
they probably decided to set the movie up like they did Iron Man so they can make several sequels out
of it. _________________ Site Moderator

I rather liked this version of Sherlock Holmes. I neevr liked any of the other previous versions, but this one I did enjoy.
I do have to agree with the comment about sequels though.. it was transparent through out _________________ For every person with a spark of genius, there are a hundred with ignition trouble. |

I finally got around to watching the movie and I must say I was pleasantly surprised
as it was all around a pretty good movie. Yep they left the ending kind of open for a
making of a sequel or two more.
I'd give it a rating of B+ _________________ Site Moderator

I grew up with the 1960s version of Sherlock Holmes. A remake with that style of Sherlock Holmes would not succeed in this modern, action oriented, special effects crazed society. The 1960s Sherlock Holmes was strictly intellectual never physical. Watson was more of a side kick rather than an iatrical part of the team.
Downey's version, which I think was done brilliantly, did a great job of combining and balancing both physical and intellectual qualities needed in a modern Sherlock Holmes. A great example was the "Fight Club" scene. He was calm, composed and every move and action had a purpose and intended result because he executed the fight in his mind first rather than simply relying on brawn.
With any major movie like this sequels are a given and this new franchise should do quite well as a result of its modern makeover. _________________ DVDCoverArt
