For those of you expecting a new interpretation of the myth of Robin Hood you'e bound to be disappointed. It's not just a new interpretation, it's a completely new story about the origins of Robin Hood leading up to the point where most of us would say the story began. Strangely enough, it incorporates elements of what most of us would accept as the conventional tale in a timeline that was supposed to be from before they ever happened. Leaving aside all of the story elements for a minute, it is also accepted that Robin Hood is a witty, clever and dashing ne'er do well, but there's nothing light about this movie. It's an unrelentingly grim tale of a dour and determined man, and at 2.5 hours long you feel every minute of it.
In a story so entrenched in our culture they either needed to make a complete departure of everything, which they didn't, or re-interpret the popular tale, which they didn't even come close to. The action was mediocre, and although there was a sense of authenticity in the sets and cinematography it didn't didn't seem to play right. Not a fun watch, and as a drama not that compelling. Maybe a C- from me, although I debated rating it lower. Don't rush to get this one. |

I kind of liked this one. I don't usually like Crowe, but watched it anyway.
This is a darker, and I think more honest portrayal of what it would have been like. Didn't really care for the fact that he wasn't really a Locksley, but that could happen. King Richard being killed kind of, well, changes the whole possible outcome of the Robin Hood story however.
I'd give it a B- _________________ For every person with a spark of genius, there are a hundred with ignition trouble.

Definitely a departure from the other versions of the Robin Hood tale but interesting non the less. Perfectly setup for the sequel which will be more likely to resemble the other Robin Hood adventures.
It get much better with a second and third viewing. Casting and cinematography are top notch. It is a little long. _________________ No matter how many times you try...you can't clone the dirt off your screen. |
