Well these things are great right up until they don't work. No warning just poof gone. My Crucial M4 worked fine. Did the latest firmware update , and worked ok for 2 days then turned the machine on... no boot drive. Tried it in another rig to make sure and yep, no boot drive. Put it back in the original and hit power button, and got called away. Came back 10 minutes later and what do you know it's running. Tests however showed it was pooched. Just got new one back and installed over the weekend.

best advice if you're going to an SSD, is to make regular backups of your system. Perhaps more so than with a mechanical drive. I won't go back to just mechanical (performance boost is too great) , but I won't trust these quite as much anymore either.

So now 5 months later just thought I'd update this for anyone here that is on the fence about SSD. I've had 3 different ones in the past 2 years (OCZ Vertex 3, Crucial M4, Intel 520) and aside from the one that I pooched by messing up a firmware update all are still running and in good condition.

Of the 3 I would reccommend the Intel first for reliability. Crucial comes in second only due to the fact that it is older architecture, but as for reliable and speed it's still excellent. OCZ... well what can I say. They have a horrible rep, and bad reliability.

Having gone SSD there is no way I would ever go back to a mechanical drive fro my OS and any important Programs or games. The first 2 were 120/128 GB drives. My Intel now is a 256, and next year I'll upgrade that to 528, or if the 1TB are out then that is the way I'll go.

Some excellent drives out there now are Plextor, Intel, Samsung and Crucial. All are good at firmware updates, although Intel seems to have few, and performance is superb.

As my PC is over 10 years old now was looking to build another soon as I can come up with the money. I was just today looking at the Crucial drives. Seem to have pretty good reviews.

Those Crucials are excellent drives. They are reliable, good firmware updates, and the run consistantly at the top of the list in performance. Right now I'd rate drives something like:

Plextor M5S
Smasung 840 Pro (don't get the reg as they use low quality mem and controller)
Crucial M4
Intel 520 (rated lowest simply due to price)
Mushkin Chronos

Where are you looking to buy from?

Getting my list of parts from Amazon. I prefer 2 hard drives. Operating system on one and most of the programs on the other. Would probably go with two 256GB drives as they aren't but a few dollars more than the 128.

I get mine from NCIX. Best place to use in Canada. Great forums for help, plus they price match. They have a US outlet as well, but they don't price match there. Still good to have the forums if you have questions.

When I built my current rig (3930K) I saved about 200 bucks buying it from them

Is there such thing as a hybrid drive?
ie: 1TB 7200 rpm SATA 1st hard drive plus ExpressCache HP 16GB Disk Cache SSD.
Is this two drives or one unit with a platter drive and a SSD combined?
Its a $100 option on a new HP. The performance boost is probably worth the money but is this device reliable?

Myself I use the 256 SSD for OS/ and anything important and I have 3 2TB WD Blacks for everything else.

Good idea! Plextor M5P, Intel 520/530, Crucial M500 or Corsair Neutron are the sweet spots now. 128 for O/S and important programs.

I have a 240 Intel 520 for O/S and most programs. I have anything with intensive writes and all storage on 3 3TB internals, and then a bunch of plug in drives in a case.
