I use PS 6, here's how I would do it.
Make your shape in a new layer.
The shape must be a selection (marching ants).
Scale your image with Free Transform (Ctrl-T) to the size your want within the selection.
On the menu at the top of your screen, choose Selection-Inverse.
Press the Delete button.
I hope that is what your are looking for. _________________ If you can remember the sixties........you weren't there. |

Try one of your lasso tools. What type of shape are you trying to make? _________________ If you can remember the sixties........you weren't there. |

Hey flyers2thecup M8,
Do you want the picture to have the same shape as the shape?
Or do you want to have the picture the same shape but then smaller so you get an border of the shape around the picture?
I will try to explain both
First draw the shape on a transparant background.
Now place the picture on a new layer.
The picture layer should now be selected.
Resize the picture with CTRL + T and then dragging the sides with the mouse til it fits.
Or if it is a shape like a star you could select the layer of the shape
press the CTRL key and click with your left mouse button on the little square in the layer selection (in the layer window the place where you select the layer). Now your shape on that layer will be selected.
Click on the picture layer you will see that the selection keeps the size and looks as that of the shape, but now you are working in the picture layer. You could invert the selection and delete the surrounding. This will change the shape of your picture into the same as the shape on the other layer.
Maybe you could place a picture of the shape and the picture here? _________________ Things can always get Better!

the shape of a tv screen
ok then resize the picture so that it fits into the tv screen let it overlap the screen a little!
set the view of the picture off and switch to the layer with the tv.
make a selection of the screen of the TV.
when you have selected the screen switch to the layer with the picture and turn it on again. Now you will see that your selection is still active on that layer. Now choose the select - inverse option. Now press delete!
The picture will now have the shape of the screen in the tv _________________ Things can always get Better!

The thing about Photoshop is there is always another way to do things.
You can use guides to preset the shape you want.
Make sure your rulers are showing. Press Ctrl-R if they are not.
Click on a ruler and drag guides to the top, bottom, left and right edges of the tv screen you want to delete.
Click on the Rectangle Marquee tool and drag your rectangle from any top corner to the opposite bottom corner of your guides. If Snap (View-Snap) is turned on, all you have to do is get close and the rectangle should snap to the guides.
Now press delete. this will delete the section within the rectangle and you will be able to see the layer immediately beneath your TV layer., which is where you want your new image.
Gotta go earn my paycheck now. _________________ If you can remember the sixties........you weren't there. |

In answer to why your shape is filling in with color, it's probably because you are using the shape tool (shortcut key-U) and not the marquee tool (shortcut key-M). The shape tool will always fill with the forground color in your toolbar. _________________ If you can remember the sixties........you weren't there. |

ok...no sweat. i guess that's one of the differences between PSP and PS...in PSP you can choose to fill the shape or not.
thanks for the heads up. |
