The Brave One

Victim/vigilante film. B+
No new ground covered here but a film done very well none the less. Erica Bain (Jodie Foster) and her fiance are brutally attacked in New York's Central Park resulting in his death and her hospitalization. After a lengthy physical recovery she is left to deal with a post traumatic emotional situation. She purchases a black market 9 mm pistol to cope with her fear. Forced to kill or be killed she defends herself in a lethal domestic violence case that just happens to take place in the local mini-mart where she is shopping. Upon later reflection she feels no remorse and the vigilante is born. She does not seek out criminals but the situations arise and deaths occur. Erica has become a "person of interest" to Detective Mercer (Terrance Howard) who suspects she could be the vigilante and although he no qualms with the results of the vigilante, he knows he must arrest the responsible party. Erica finally gets a lead to the identities of the three men who attacked her and her fiance and sets out to exact retribution. In the final outcome two of the three attackers succumb to the "vigilante" but the third presents a dilemma for Erica and Detective Mercer.
