Hi GB,
When it comes to flashing firmware, the Pioneer writers sometimes act funny. I think that's why you'll have to agree with their statement before being able to download the new firmware.
I've had some weird things happening with my two Pioneer writers before. One of them became totally useless and I had to take it back for a replacement. The other one I fixed it by re-flashing the firmware to the older version I had before the update. Depending on your model, it may or may not accept the older version of it's firmware.
Be carefull to download/flash the firmware that is specifically for that one model. Otherwise it will render your writer useless.

Good luck my friend and hope this helps. Smile

thanx Meshy mate, yeah, I know the firmware can be "iffy" sometimes, and cant be reflashed in some models, its just strange that my writer behaved well for quite some time until today....I think it may be trying to tell me its tired Laughing Laughing , cheers for the help matey Very Happy (I did get the right one for the model)

My old burner (BenQ DW822) had the same problem and when I did one of the firmware updates, it started working - weird.

But, that being said, I do believe that the CD laser is different than the DVD laser so it is possible the the CD laser went bad.

Probably more than likely the CD read/write laser is dead or dying on it I've
had friends with the same problem with the same brand as your drive and
also with other brands going bad like that, DVD= just fine CD= dead. I always
just tell them think of it like it is a light bulb it only burns for so long of a time
before it burns itself out. Crying or Very sad

I read about this problem with the pioneer drive, check your IDE cable, is it the 40 pin or 80? the newer pioneer drive requires the 80 pin cable otherwise it will not read the disc properly.
