How to brighten text of a scan without dramatically affecting the rest of the cover.

first of all, never use Brighten And Contrast.

Go to Image>Adjustments>Selective Color.

Under Colors select Neutrals

Move the Black Slider to the Left. Observe the effect.

If the text is White, then select White rather than Neutral. Some text may appear White, but is not as white as you think which is why Neutral has a greater effect. Whether White or Neutral, always use the Black slider to adjust.

Another method for brightening text.

Go to Image>Adjustments>Curves.

Select Options

There are three options to select from. Select one of the top two and experiment with them until you have an understanding of how they affect the cover. You adjust the effects by using the left mouse button to move the diagonal line.

If possible always select the text you want to brighten rather than the entire cover or even half the cover. If you need to adjust the entire cover by all means do so.

You can reset the changes you have made without hitting cancel by holding down the ALT key which changes the Cancel button into a Reset button.
