OK, so as everybody knows the new movie goes back to the origins of the original series and its crew. For those who grew up watching this version of the show there's bound to be the inevitable comparisons. It's a young cast, and they're playing their younger selves, so you have to think of that when you watch.

The good: Fun story line and good action that keeps you going throughout. The casting is generally good, although with some rough edges that hopefully will wear off in time, and the verbal references to all the cliched catch lines from the original series will draw laughs from everyone who watched the original, even if they had to be forced into the dialogue at times, or if they were overly campy.

The bad: The ship designs were terrible, in the "more is better" school of thought, and consequently they come across as cluttered and fake looking at times, and not visually friendly. There were holes in the story that are basically explained away by an "alternate time path" which I won't explain any further lest I ruin the plot. The variations won't sit well with everyone, even if the explanation is there. Some elder Spock variations which might also seem a bit strange, but you'll know them as you see them if you watched the original or the movies, so again I won't explain any further. You can see and judge for yourselves.

For someone who didn't grow up with this stuff the holes will disappear, the tradeoff for that being that they won't catch all the fun references either. If your audience was like mine then half will laugh, and half will be silent, so you'll know who's who. If you take it from a fresh perspective this was a fun, enjoyable movie, and well worth seeing in the theatre. I also expect that it will generate a whole series of new/old generation sequels, and that the cast will grow into their roles. I'd definitely recommend it.

I went to se this one last night. I guess that as long as you forget the original series for themost part then this one is ok. There is a lot of deviation from the original plot lines, that even any of the series that followed managed to keep intact

There is action right from the opening segments right through to the ending, and it's obvious that the intention is for there to be many seguels to this one. Hopefully they will be more true to the original, as I'm not sure how they can't be and not have any tie in to the originals.

While enjoyable to watch (barring the obvious deviations) I couldn't help but thiink that this was an obvious cash grab, with no considerations given to the original ideas by Rodenburry. I can almost see him rolling over in his grave at this one.

My rating: A- for action and storyline. C for continuity in the original, or for that matter any of the following series.

I really enjoyed this film and I'm not a big Star Trek follower.
I liked that they didn't go crazy with special effects, the story was interesting and the film was overall entertaining. I may buy this on Bluray when it comes out.

I started watching from the beginning in '66, so there is nothing I don't know about the franchise. By the end of Enterprise, the show was getting really tired, and even I was ready to see it put out of its misery. I look at it this way. The reboot was necessary to recruit new fans and save the future of Star Trek. The new timeline creates opportunities for new stories, and the old ones are still on DVD. I have them all already.
