A fairy tale set against the backdrop of poverty, violence and opportunism, this movie is colourful, vibrant, compelling and original. I'd held off on watching this one because I had preconceived notions of what it was I was going to be watching, and was expecting a long, dry melodrama. It wasn't any of those things, and if you know right from the beginning of the movie what the last question has to be that knowledge still doesn't detract from the story at all. I don't think you can take all the cultural and sociological stuff at face value, but as an entertaining story there's really nothing you can take away from that, or from the excellent performances of the cast.
Bottom line, this movie won best picture for a reason, and unlike some of the previous winners (No Country For Old Men or Shakespeare in Love come to mind) I can understand why this one won the award. I give it an A. |
