Ah, yes. The supposedly engaging, puzzle filled yarn of the scientists against the church. Well, there were absolutely no engaging puzzles, but fortunately you only had to consider them for brief milliseconds before the central character (Hanks) had already extrapolated their meaning from thin air. Very thin air. There was a girl in the movie. No one is really sure why. There were speeches, but nobody looked like they believed what they were saying anyway. People died, but most looked happy to be able to escape the ludicrous plot. Yes, it was dumb in many spots, but all that meant is that even the the less gifted intellectually could understand why they were bored too.The movie was long, slow and often dull, but fortunately the ending was reasonably predictable, so you didn't have to watch the whole thing if you didn't want to. The only reason to do so was to confirm that you really did in fact know who the villain was after all, even if the logic of his motives escaped you.
I've never seen Hanks in a more humourless, dull, unengaging character. I've rarely seen sillier or more contrived "action" in a supposedly "intelligent" or "adult" film. Let's all hope there aren't any more entries into this utterly silly franchise. |
