Does the quality of something burned increase if burned at slower speeds? Will burning something at 8X instead of 16X reduce the amount of glitches and/or coasters created?
I'm just wondering if it's profitable time-wise to burn at slower speeds for an overall increase in quality vs. time saved by burning at higher speeds. |

Most of the time it doesn't really matter if you burn at a slower speed the
quality of the disk is the biggest factor to start with. I use Verbatim 16x
+R MCC004 disc's and they burn great at the 16x rated speed I have tried
burning at 8x, 12x, and they all come out the same so slower isn't really
better. Now with lower quality disc's it might help a little but not a lot to
burn them at slower speeds low quality disc's leads to low quality burns. I've
tried some low quality disc's in the past and it didn't make any difference at
what speed they were burned at 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x, they all turned out to be
very sorry burns so the best bet is to just stick with high quality disc's and
burn them at their rated speed. _________________ Site Moderator

When I burn regular cd-r's at max speed (54x or whtever) the Data Verificaton (Nero) fails maybe 30-40% of the time vs 16x which seems to never fail. Anyway, I backup my dvds at 6x, with 8x being the max possible. |

i agree. when i was buying cheap media, i would always burn at half the speed of the max. ever since i've been using TYs, roughly about 600 burns, i've been burning at 6x without a single coaster. i'll never use another disc again. not saying there aren't comperable media out there, just that i'm not changing anything for no reason. Very true flyers2thecup, I used to use cheap media and fast burn speeds and had nothing but trouble, I have been buying TY for about 2 years now, I slowed down the burn speed and have not had 1 coaster since them, I have used about 6 or 7 hundred TY, they are the best and not really any more expensive then other stuff if you take into the fact of bad burners and coasters and having to do things over, just my 2 cents _________________ Ken |

I'm with Jonno. I always burn @ 4x. I can't guarantee that it wouldn't work at higher speeds, but I feel it increases you chances. I am usually not in a hurry anyways. _________________ GO SEAHAWKS! |

I can't believe all the people here burning at snail speed. 16x burners have been available for awhile people, if you have one you should be exploiting it.
As long as you use quality media (ie major media name and not the no-name free after a rebate *) you can burn at 16x without a problem.
I use Verbatim (MCC 03RG20 currently) DVD-R media and very rarely ever have a coaster. I burn many data discs were I run CRC checks after the burn and 99.9% of the time the burn is good.
I first bought a CD burner back in '96 for $800 US and have owned many CD/DVD burners since over the years and consider myself quite experienced in the burning game. Back in the '90s you did have to worry about burn speeds more, but this was related to CD burners with audio discs. This is because audio doesn't have the same builtin data redundancy that data discs have.
Todays DVD burners are usually all great quality and can burn at top speed with no worries.
Go for it at top speed.

I'm using TY's and the quality has been great, and so far I've only had one coaster, but I've always been burning at max speed. Just wondering whether the slower speed burn might have eliminated that coaster. There doesn't really seem to be a consensus here. |

I use 16x Verbatims but only burn at 8x just to be safe.I also reboot and go offline and disable running programs in the background too,but that's just me being overly safe.It seems like whenever I used to get skippers in the past I would be downloading in the background and chatting on IM and all that. |

I found that burning @ a max of 12x for myself when I push it higher i get errors or freezing. burning at 12x with no other progs running does it for me. I use TDK 16x and the Ritek 8x with no problems |

hmmmm...... I can download, re-encode a movie, surf the net, run a virus scan,
or whatever multitasking I want (or need) to do while burning my Verbatim disc's
at 16x and I have never had any problems at all with (coasters or skippers). _________________ Site Moderator

Same here. I have an LG burner and a NEC as backup to that. Both 16x. I use either Verbatims or Sony discsand I've not had one coaster in over 400 burns. Now when I used the cheapies, that was another story and it didn't matter what speed I burned at. Plus they never seemed to last, and I think now I have pretty much redone all my older ones. _________________ For every person with a spark of genius, there are a hundred with ignition trouble. |

After many burns at various speeds (DVD) I am most comfortable with 4x ...........this is the speed a lot of people recommend.......and the one I have most success with using cheap to good media. If it was TY I might go faster....but 4x is plenty fast enough for me. _________________ ....

I burn at 8x and only ocassionally get a data verification error with nero.
Does everyone burn with verification on as the default is off.
I agree with the media being the most important. If you can afford TY's they are the best. |

I just burn all my disks all at once and take out any variables just to be safe.I used to do the same with the multi-tasking in the background too,but after a few skippers I just got superstitious..hehe. |

I guess I'll try Verbatims since everyone here talks about those and Ritek being the best. I hope that's the case. Thanks |

flyers is correct in what he says TY is supposed to be the best disc on the market (the cream
of the crop) with Verbatim the next closest one in disc quality and a tiny bit cheaper than TY. _________________ Site Moderator

I burn at 8x using Verbatims on my old 1.1gig computer but on my 3gig dual core I can burn at max. your computer can make a difference not just the burner or media .(Using good quality media like Verbatim is just the smart thing to do!) |

I burn at whatever speed the media will allow some 8X at 12X . I have had no problems burning at 16X with quality media. As flyers2thecup stated if you use cheap media you will may have burn issuses. The freezing in the disc is that the addhesive holding the layers has broken loose or has started. This can also be because of your Standalone play and not your burner. Many standalone will play minus and plus but do not support them. Playing media on them will eventually ruin the disc as well. |

Well I did a little experiment today with different burning speeds on the same media
Verbatim MCC004 +R 16x disc's using the Liteon 160P6S burner with PSOA firmware.
I burned 10 disc's at different speeds using the same data for each disc. I started off
at 4x then moved on to 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x testing the PIE and PIF on each disc after
every burn. I burned the first 5 disc's and tested then I did a restart on the computer
and shut down all background programs that were not needed. I then repeated the test
again to see if I got consistent burns with everything running and without anything extra
running in the background at the same burn speeds 4x, 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x in that order again
testing each disc between burns. I was extremely surprised at the results that I acheived
it seems that the disc's burn worse at slower speeds on my system. It seems that anything
under 16x has a higher PIE and PIF rate than 16x has on my system. hmmm...... the disc burns a
lot better at 16x on my system than one burned at 4x, 6x, 8x, or 12x does with or without any
background programs running I get the same same results............. go figure. _________________ Site Moderator

I burn at 4x because I use mostly budget media. Most back-up forums appear to recommend burning at 4x, whether using premium or budget media, regardless of burner to be on the safe side. I have experimented with faster speeds (on budget media) and found the incidence of coasters increased, with my burners . 2x speed is usually unsuitable for me also. _________________ ....

Anybody else try the same kind of stuff that DaRipper did? I'm amazed at what his results were and would be extremely curious to see whether that was consistent across other people's systems as well. |
