Hi Folks
It's that time of year again and my boss is helping me build out a new PC in lieu of some time owed. With this in mind I'd like some feedback on what I'm looking at doing.
Currently this is my plan:
Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 2.4GHz
Asus P5K board
4 gigs ram
Antec 900 case.
2 250 gig drives.
2 dvd burners.
ASUS 8600GT 256MB DDR3 PCI-E Vid Card ( Not a big gamer )
Haven't decided yet on if I want to put XP Pro back on it, or Vista Ultimate. I have both, but am leaning towards XP.
I'd appreciate any feedback anyone might have
Thanks in advance _________________ For every person with a spark of genius, there are a hundred with ignition trouble. |

I have to agree 100% with GB and boney on staying with XP only thing is if you're going
to try and use all 4GB of RAM; Windows XP 32 bit will only see around 3GB of it unless
you are planning to use Windows XP 64bit then it should see all 4GB of RAM. Vista is the
same way as XP on the 32bit part only seeing 3 or so GB of RAM and XP is IMO is a lot better
right now than Vista will ever be now or in the future. _________________ Site Moderator

Thank's for the feedback. I had only installed the 3 gigs as I wasn't sure which I was going to do. I gave the Vusta Ultimate 64 bit a fighting chance, but after 3 days of hell, I went back to XP Pro. I use Vista at work and havne't had near the problems I had with it at home, but again I use 32 bit at work so maybe that was the diff. I couldn't get anything to work. Can you say frustrating? _________________ For every person with a spark of genius, there are a hundred with ignition trouble. |

Oh yeah that makes a big difference 32 bit is more compatible with everything than 64 bit is
XP Pro 64 bit or Vista 64 bit both sucks IMO. I gave XP Pro 64 bit a go once and nothing wanted
to work with it drivers,hardware,etc.etc. _________________ Site Moderator

Yeah it seems to be what everyone is saying. I think I'm going to get caughtup on a few things and then have another go at Vista. It's not bad once you get used to it, and the rig should be quick enough with it.
Funny thing is I've talked to a couple of people and they are telling met they haveno problem using Vista 64 and the programsI had the trouble with.
One example was using DVD95 my DVD drives showed as no region set and would not allow me to set one.... That's when I waved the white flag of frustration _________________ For every person with a spark of genius, there are a hundred with ignition trouble. |

I don't think that was it.... they worked fine every other time. I'll know soon though. Either later tonight or tomorrow I'm going to reinstall Vista using the 32 bit. See where I get to go from there. I can use a couple of more gray hairs _________________ For every person with a spark of genius, there are a hundred with ignition trouble. |

Back up and running on Vista Ultimate 32 bit with Service Pack one installed. So far I've not had any service issues whatsoever. Everything works smooth, and while it does use about 25% more resources that XP with 3 gigs and a quad core you really don't notice it at all.
One thing I do like is the cooling in the Antec 900 case. I'm just running all stock coolers with the 2 120 intake fans on the front and the 120 exhaust on the back with the 200 on the top. Checking the CPU and MB they run at 25 and 30 degrees in idle. About 44 and 35 under load. The HD's are running at 22 degrees.
Ultimate has enough eye candy to give one a severe case of Diabetes _________________ For every person with a spark of genius, there are a hundred with ignition trouble. |
