I have a hard time knowing exactly how to rate this movie. I'd love to be able to say that it was entertaining, but truly it wasn't. It was a long and somber movie.

Had the movie been poorly directed it would have been unwatchable. But it wasn't. The fact of the matter is that the direction and the acting were absolutely superb. Daniel Day Lewis richly deserves the award for what he did, and all of the cast were equally brilliant. Lewis play a bitter and lonely man against the other side of himself, a cynical and manipulative young preacher. Two sides of the same coin. Facets of the same person. The subtext was well done and this is definitely not a movie for the lazy watcher. You really have to be able to appreciate the subtext to get any enjoyment out of the movie at all, which to be perfectly frank was lengthy and slow.

You can really appreciate the film, but it's a hard one to enjoy, and it's definitely not for everyone. Still, if you are able to appreciate a performance for the sake of the performance it's probably arguably the best acted piece of cinema that's come out in recent memory. I wouldn't watch it again though.

Don't know how much that helps anyone. Smile

I would have to agree, enjoyed most of it, hated some of it, I thought it didnt need to be as long as it was, Daniel Day Lewis was very good in the role, but wouldnt watch it again
