Pretty lighthearted look at a serious subject, the arming of Afghani rebels under Soviet occupation in the 80's. They cleaned up the subject and dealt with it amongst a lot of lighthearted banter cocktails. Tom Hanks is the amiable, if morally flexible congressman with the right connections and Phillip Seymour Hoffman is the cynical idealist in covert ops. Lots of eye candy, including Julia Roberts (if she does something for you. She does nothing for me) amidst hot tub parties and texas fund raisers, not to mention the congressman's office.

A superficial and airy dealing with the story, but a pleasant and entertaining watch for the moviegoer. Not a classic, by any stretch, but Hoffman and Hanks are reasonably good in their roles and you won't feel cheated by having to spend a couple of hours to watch it.

I would agree that it is a serious subject that is portrayed lightheartedly.
The amazing thing to me is the fact that pretty much singled handedly this guy, Charlie Wilson, decides to throw a monkey wrench in the efforts of his cold war adversary and ends up liberating a country from foreign occupation. From a political standpoint, this guy accomplished a great deal. My hat is off to him.
I will venture to say that none of the following: George Bush, John McCain, Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton will never accomplish anything equal in stature to what Charlie Wilson did. Just my opinion.
